The Maine Black Bears represents the athletic programs and intercollegiate teams of the University of Maine in Orono, Maine. The university has NCAA Division I status and competes in the America East Conference and the Football Championship Subdivision. Maine has a long celebrated men's ice hockey program that has won multiple national championships, including its first, in 1993. Several star NHL players have come out of the university, including Paul Kariya, Dustin Penner and Jimmy Howard. Maine also fields a number of other men's and women's sports, including baseball, basketball, football, softball and track.
