Though the Austrian composer Franz Schubert is widely considered to be one of the best songwriters to ever have lived, during his brief life, Schubert lived in poverty and the appreciation of his music was minimal at best. His symphonies, operas and piano work were appreciated by friends and family, but mainstream acceptance of his pieces were largely ignored by the public. Dying in the midst of an artistic flourish at the age of 31, many contemporaries of Schubert championed his work and over time, the public eventually came to see Schubert as the genius composer and underrated individual that he was.
