Formed in Topeka in 1973, Kansas produced some of the biggest hits in classic rock with tracks such as "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind." Beyond those smash singles however, the group spent the majority of its career perfecting a hybrid of British style progressive rock and the hook-based hard rock being made by its American contemporaries. In 1984, Kansas split up, only to reform a year later with an altered lineup and a renewed sense of purpose. In recent years, the group has toured the college circuit while performing with each individual school's orchestra, resulting in a clever twist on the band's symphonic style and a chance to raise money for school music programs.
