Midsummer's Day or Jani is the celebration of the summer solstice, and takes place throughout Latvia. Preceded by Ligo Diena (Midsummer's Day Eve), the day is a national holiday, spent with friends and family; the Ministry of Culture organises several events across the city of Riga. During this season, Latvians visit forests looking for herbs known locally for curative properties. The main reason for the celebrations is the hope for a good harvest in the coming autumn.
