This is by far the most important day in the history of Latvia. It was back in 1918 that the Republic of Latvia was proclaimed as a self-governing state. But this movement subsided and for a long time the dream of a separate sovereign seemed distant for Latvians. After many dramatic and historic upheavals, the Republic of Latvia was born on August 21, 1991. Nevertheless, November 18 is celebrated as the day of Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia. Most businesses close on this day.
