No Civil War battles were fought in California, but that doesn’t mean we weren’t an important part of the effort. California contributed soldiers to both sides of the conflict, and wealth from its gold fields. The state being admitted as a “Free” state was seen as a slap in the face to Southern slaveholders, and as an impetus to the coming war.
