The Walkmen is an indie rock band that formed in 2000 from the ashes of two broken up garage rock bands. In order to put distance between its sound and that of its members' previous acts, the band creates a more refined post punk sound and offers crisp vocals as well as clearly defined instrumentals, unlike the lo-fi style of most garage rock. Though the New York-based band's first few records were received with a fair amount of excitement from critics and audiences, the group truly captured its signature sound with its 2012 record, Heaven, a calculated and thoughtful album that employs the nostalgic power of vintage instruments like upright pianos and double basses without the muddy, lo-fi static of decades past.
