Citizen Cope is the moniker of Brooklyn-based artist, Clarence Greenwood. Blending elements of folk, soul, rock, hip-hop and reggae into a surprisingly cohesive whole, Greenwood is a thoughtful singer/songwriter who has done his homework on the different genres he picks and pulls from. Originally from Tennessee, he started his music career as a DJ for the hip-hop group Basehead, before deciding to pursue a career on his own in the late 1990s. He released his debut album as Citizen Cope titled Cope Citizen, in 1992 and followed the record a decade later with his eponymous 2002 effort. As a multi-instrumentalist and turntable wizard, Greenwood has a seasoned ear for both electronic and and acoustic music and often serves as his own producer, most notably on his 2004 and 2006 albums, The Clarence Greenwood Recordings and Every Waking Moment.
