Louis McClellan Potter (1873-1912) grew up in Troy, NY, attended Trinity College in Hartford, CT, and then traveled to Paris to further his artistic training. We take a deep dive into Potter’s life and work, studying the gifted sculptor against the backdrop of the internationally preeminent Saratoga Club (today’s Canfield Casino) run by Richard Canfield who was called “the biggest gambler in the world” by the New York Times. Canfield created his Italian Gardens in 1903, telling landscape architect Charles Wellford Leavitt, Jr., “I want the finest park that money can make…the cost is immaterial.” Several of Potter’s original sculptures in Italian Carrara marble still grace Congress Park, including the iconic Tritons known as Spit and Spat. Narrated by Rumara Jewett with period readings by Tamie Ehinger and Michael Belanger
