Hip-hop is known primarily for distinctive vocal patterns as well as studio produced beats and samples. Breaking this mold, New York by way of Philadelphia hip-hop outfit The Roots combine live instrumentation with rap-inspired vocals. The group is somewhat reminiscent of a marching band--possibly because of its tuba player--but also because all the members of the band have a lively spirit and seem to be constantly parading around while they're onstage. In 2009, The Roots started its tenure as the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
