The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is an important religious period for Muslims worldwide. During this month, they observe a period of strict fasting where neither food nor water is consumed between dawn and dusk. In the evening, makeshift food stalls appear in Geylang Serai and along Bussorah Street, near the golden-domed Sultan Mosque. Besides food items, these stalls offer a wide array of clothes, furniture and handicrafts. After dusk, mosques island-wide teem with the faithful who come to join the evening congregational prayers.
