Vesak Day commemorates the birth, death and enlightenment of the Buddha. Devotees visit Buddhist temples to light candles, offer donations and listen to the monks chant Buddhist sutras. Some temples stage special exhibitions, conduct initiation ceremonies and present lectures on the Buddha's teachings. Celebrations are held at all temples but are most spectacular at the Buddhist Lodge near River Valley Road, the Thai Buddhist Temple at Jalan Bukit Merah and the Tibetan Buddhist Sasana Temple at Jalan Toa Payoh. Temple etiquette requires visitors to be dressed appropriately.
