The ‘Saints’ get their nickname after becoming England’s first team affiliated with a church, most notably St. Mary’s Y.M.A. The club was established in 1885 and though it was composed of amateur players, it still is one of the oldest teams in English football. Southampton did not join the Football League until 1921, and it did not see any titles until the 1976 FA Cup, in which the squad beat Manchester United 1-0. The squad’s main rival is Portsmouth F.C. and when the two clubs play in the South Coast Derby, it is always a match where tension runs high.
