Guiseppe Verdi's incomparable four-act opera has since been translated from its original Italian into dozens of languages in its countless international performances since its 1853 debut. Il Trovatore (or, The Troubadour) tells the story of a count and a troubadour, vying for the love of princess Leonora. As a gypsy's curse haunts the count, tragedy and magic fill the stage in this compelling, musically virtuosic opera. Verdi's nimble and evocative compositions have endured over the years, buttressed by the archetypal characters from Antonio Garcia Gutierrez's source play, El Trovador.
