Marc Cohn is an American singer/songwriter known for his piano playing and emotive adult-contemporary ballads. Signed by Atlantic Records in 1989, the Cleveland-based musician proceeded to release an eponymous debut LP in 1991 that won him hits such as "Walking in Memphis" and "True Companion," in addition to a Grammy award for Best New Artist. Cohn is a singer/songwriter in the classic, unflashy mold that launched plenty of careers throughout the 1970s and beyond. His songs combine the introspective, gentle feel of vintage Van Morrison with a touch of the gruff, self-assured intonation of songwriters such as Bruce Springsteen and Steve Earle. In 2005, Cohn had a brush with tragedy when he was shot during an attempted carjacking. Luckily, the bullet only grazed his head and caused no serious damage, allowing him to continue his run as one of America's more valued folk-rock songwriters.
