Brian Culbertson is a multi-instrumentalist from Decatur, Illinois, who has been an active contemporary jazz musician since 1994. His early material with Blue Moon records exhibits heavy funk influences with hardly any vocals. After switching over to Atlantic Records, he released his first celebrated and critically acclaimed album, Nice & Slow in 2001. He switched labels again, this time transferring to GRP Records for his album It's On Tonight, which debuted at number one on Billboard Magazine's Contemporary Jazz Charts in 2005. On top of his own music, Culbertson composes for other contemporary jazz musicians, most notably the legendary composer and producer Herb Alpert. Culbertson's 12th studio album, titled XII and featuring legendary R&B singers Avant, Faith Evans and Brian McKnight, demonstrates the evolution of his style from instrumental funk to jazz/funk and R&B fusion.
