Formed in the mid-1990s as the solo project of Dan Bejar, Destroyer has steadily evolved over the years to incorporate a backing band, though Bejar has remained at the helm as its primary songwriter. While Destroyer released multiple EPs in the 1990s, it didn't established itself as an indie rock act on the cultural radar until 2001 with the release of Streethawk. The album quickly became a fan favorite and marked Bejar as a masterful lyricist, able to comment on societal excess with charming wit. Destroyer has consistently altered its sound, adding a full horn section and polished production, or applying a stripped-down bedroom folk approach. Regardless of its chameleon-like nature, the group has always manged apply a unique sonic touch and a grand vision to its sound that has been pleasing to fans and critics alike.
