TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTSEEING, PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig financed the erection of an artists' colony around 1900. It is a notable collection of Art Nouveau buildings flanked by the 48 m high Hochzeitsturm (Wedding Tower). The arts were already supported in the ducal seat in the 18th century, for instance in the so-called Darmstadt Circle, to which Goethe also belonged. In the centre stands the ducal palace with its halfhourly sounding carillon. It is now used by the Technical University.
