TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTSEEING, PRACTICAL INFORMATION
The skyline of the town is dominated above all by the medieval Norman buildings of Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle, which were both inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. The fortified aspect of the buildings is easily explained by the closeness of Scotland; Durham was for centuries a bulwark against the Scots. The rooms in the monastery have, particularly in recent times, become known to a wider public because the indoor sequences for the Harry Potter film were filmed here.
