Gottfried Semper's plans for the town hall mark the assembly room of the municipal legislative building with an imposing temple-front. Two smaller side entrances were used by the executive administration. The gable is decorated with symbolic figures that stand for the protection of justice and wisdom. The town hall, built from 1865 to 1868, is one of the most important buildings in the style of Historism in Switzerland.
