First built in the 15th century, the Hofgarten originally served as a rather crude vegetable garden for the imperial court but was later enlarged and developed into a beautiful park in the style of an English garden. The general public were first granted access in the 19th century and, also in this period, a wall with wrought-iron gates was built surrounding the park. There are lawns on which visitors can sit down and relax, numerous benches, a children's play area and the Hofgartencafé is the undisputed queen of Innsbruck's nightlife! The former court tea house, on the eastern side of the park, is now an art pavilion exhibiting a variety of works.
