Situated some 10km from Innsbruck, the village of Axams boasts some of the best skiing and snowboarding in Austria. The legendary Axamer Lizum contains over 40km of pistes, a 5km toboggan-run and a 5km cross-country course which leads on to a 25km course in good weather. Snowboarders rave about the Lizum's freestyle slopes. Although it is extremely popular with tourists, the village has managed to retain much of its authentic Tyrolean atmosphere - a fact visible in ancient folklore customs like Wampelerlaufen and at the annual village festival.
