A former mining town, Sonora's roots can be traced back to the California Gold Rush. It also had a flourishing timber industry, an occupation whose traces can still be found in the city's fabric. Today Sonora is a tourist destination delighting visitors with attractions such as the Dragoon Gulch Trail and the Indigeny Reserve. It is also home to the stunning Red Church and the Tuolumne County Museum.
