The State Opera has undergone several changes of management since the end of Communism and now offers a rather oddly mixed bag. The mainstay continues to be Verdi and other 19th-century Italian and French opera. Given the limited funding, the management go all out to put on an excellent show, both visually and aurally. Although the results are unpredictable, visitors are usually well entertained. The other side of the coin is the adventurous programming of difficult modern opera and contemporary works such as Philip Glass' Fall of the House of Usher and a new opera-musical called Dorian Gray, based on the Oscar Wilde novel. Every August, a Verdi festival is held here while other opera houses sleep.
