Castletownbere boasts the second largest natural harbor in the world. It's one of Ireland's premier fishing ports, though the town itself owes its origins to the Allihies Copper Mines. Being the largest town on the peninsula, it's the only place where shopping, banking, money-changing, posting and information-gathering can be taken care of at once. It's a more perky, colorful town than of yore and visitors can be assured of decent accommodation and good restaurants, as well as plenty of lively pubs.
