The eastward flowing River Lee slices through the heart of Cork City, and pulls apart significant sections of the city to form two divisive islands. Referred to as Ireland's 'real capital' by its immensely proud residents, Cork City certainly has all the material to thrive as the nation's nominal seat of power. Then again, the city basks in an underrated and unspoiled charm that comes with being the nation's second city, a priceless trade-off that even its residents would agree with. Culture, history, education, gastronomy and nature all converge at the scenic banks of this riverside Irish gem. Art houses and sprawling university campuses flourish beside the graying walls of the city's prized cathedrals. The Medieval-origin Red Abbey is the only surviving structure from this time period, an imposing Augustinian monastery that continues to command awe and reverence. Not merely restricted to architecture, Cork City's rolling expanses are also fun spots for recreation – from the retail-backed charm of Saint Patrick's Street, to a host of essentially Gaelic games that get Corkonians indubitably excited.
