In the heart of the town centre between the impressive –and famous!- promontory of the Rocher de la Vierge (the Virgin's Rock) and the Hôtel du Palais, this site is full of history. Since the beginning of the century, it has been popular with czars and French upper classes (who love sea bathing) and reached its climax in 1956 when a group of American surfers came to experiment on its exceptional waves. This was the very beginning of surfing in France. Nowadays, people come to surf, of course, to swim and also to hire deck chairs and parasols to rest on the beach or to wander along its promenade, where many restaurants and shops are to be found.
