The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club is the venue for the coveted Wimbledon, the world renowned lawn tennis championship. This private membership opens its doors to tennis-lovers everywhere in late June and early July, when tennis' top contenders do battle on the courts. The club has held the Wimbledon Championship since 1877, making the tournament the oldest of its kind in the world. The championships are held on the club's Centre Court, while early rounds of the tournament can be played on any of the club's 19 grass courts. The club itself was founded in 1868 by six gentlemen who wanted a private space to play croquet and tennis.
