Maison de Chœurs (Chapelle Saint Charles)

Maison de Chœurs is a performance space in Montpellier dedicated to presenting quality classical vocal performances. Located in the Chapelle St Charles, Maison de Chœurs is associated with over 20 local choral groups. Built at the site of a Carmelite convent, Chapelle Saint-Charles once formed a part of a general hospital by the same name. The chapel was originally constructed in 1680, however its current appearance can be credited to the architect Jean Giral who remodeled its structure in 1751. The chapel's facade is fashioned upon a classical design, with splendid architectural details and ornamental touches that lend it an air of allure. Inside you will notice galleries that go up two levels. These galleries were equipped with cots for the hospital's patients who chose to attend mass. The chapel continued to serve as a place of worship for a few years even after the hospital was closed. Today, it continues on as the Maison de Chœurs, or House of Choirs.
