Surrounded by the snow-capped Alps, Turin is a city bursting with vitality. Unified Italy's first capital between 1861 to 1865 CE, the city has a history as an economic and cultural powerhouse that's visible in its glorious architectural landmarks like the monumental Mole Antonelliana, Turin's most recognizable symbol and the Neoclassical Gran Madre di Dio Church, with its imposing facade. With a vibrant art scene and a surfeit of art galleries, museums and music venues, the city invites art and music enthusiasts to explore all it has to offer. The city center is an expression of the Baroque style, a favorite of the then ruling Kingdom of Savoy, while historical events have left their mark in the form of the arterial main street, Via Roma. The Savoy Residences, recognized by UNESCO as a heritage site, are best seen from the beautiful Piazza San Carlo where Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy's, statue is found.
