The beautiful garden of Villa Gregoriana on the slopes of Tivoli's acropolis has been reopened since 2005 with the help of The National Trust for Italy. Woods, green paths, archeological ruins, caves, and a great waterfall are just a short walk from the historical center of Tivoli. This park is named after Pope Gregory XVI who, in order to protect Tivoli from the floods, ordered the diversion of the River Aniene, resulting in this remarkable waterfall. This landscape has impressed many painters, including Lorraine and Poussin, among others, and has become a favorite subject of their masterpieces.
