Established in 1872, the name "Fresno" came from the Spanish word for Ash Tree, something the city has in abundance and line the San Joaquin River. Stretching over an area of 112 square miles (290 square kilometers), Fresno is regarded as one of the nation's populous cities. The city has a glorious heritage as characterized by the popular neighborhoods of Tower District and Downtown.
