TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTSEEING, PRACTICAL INFORMATION
A day trip to Lucca, considered the “town of 100 churches,” must include a visit to the Cathedral of San Martino, a remarkable Romanesque church built around 1070. Among the many attractions, visit the marble burial monument of Ilaria del Carretto in the Sacristy,a Renaissance masterpiece sculpted by Jacopo della Quercia, as well as the shrine containing the Volto Santo, a wooden crucifix known as the Holy Face that is so devoutly venerated that pilgrimages have been undertaken since the Middle Ages to worship it. And what a surprise to finally discover, under the portico in front of the church, the curious (and mysterious) image of a labyrinth carved on a side column!
