In the year 1761, a watchtower was built to guard the freshwater wells of Abu Dhabi. The tower went on to be extended and finally a palace stood as the final outcome. Qasr Al Hosn Palace or the white fort, as it is alternatively known, was the residence of the Al Nahyan, built by Sheikh Shakhboot Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The clan of the Al Nahyan resided there till 1966. The palace was also the seat of the government for a long period of time. Today, it also houses the Cultural Foundation that displays exhibits and works towards retaining the culture of the city. Qasr Al Hosn Palace has undergone restoration and renovation process and till date it continues to do so. Ironically it was never white from its time of creation, it was later painted white during one of the renovations. The palace is currently closed for renovations, call ahead for more information.
