The Sendesaal (Broadcasting Studio) was built in 1952 by Radio-Bremen with the intention of creating a recording space with the finest acoustics and soundproofing. In 2007, Radio Bremen moved to a new location in the city, but the Sendesaal thankfully still puts on concerts for the public. Some of the people who have played here include John Cage, Theador W. Adorno, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Philip Glass, & Thelonius Monk. They host mainly classical, neo-classical and jazz outfits, but the owners of the hall have eclectic tastes, so there are frequently surprises in the lineup. The stage, with its specially designed soundproof walls, makes you feel like you are in a recording studio, which you are. There is a fixed seating arrangement--no mosh pits here. The Sendesaal has almost been forced to close its doors for good a couple times, but with some fund raising concerts and support from the community, it has been able to remain open and begin to thrive again.
