Believed to be one of the largest castle ruins in the Taunus region, Burg Hohenstein has endured through several centuries, since it was established in 1190. It was built at the behest of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, and served as a formal residence for the family since about 1260. Since 1968, the castle ruins have housed a hotel and a restaurant, and its courtyard hosting several open-air events during summer.
