Estadio de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos
The Estadio de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, or the Estadio de la UNMSM, is a popular venue for sporting events in the city. A part of the university, the stadium was opened in May 1951 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the founding of UNMSM. With a maximum permitted capacity of 43,000, the stadium hosts some of the major Second Division soccer team tournaments in the city, and is the home stadium of the university’s Club Deportivo. Besides soccer, the venue has also hosted other sporting events like the Special Olympics and Sports National University. The stadium also is the venue for concerts by major artists like Santana, Green Day, Metallica and Shakira.
