Athens

Athens, known officially as Athens-Clarke County, is a consolidated city-county, meaning operating as a city as well as a county, in Georgia. The establishment of Athens is, rather, an incidental event. A part of the land that is now occupied by the city was bought to build a state-funded university, the University of Georgia. As the university grew in prominence, more funds were needed in order to build more structures of the university, and thus the area around it was sold to businesses to bring in funds. Gradually, homes also cropped up over the area, and Athens was officially incorporated as a town in 1806. Today, Athens is a bustling city, filled with a diverse population and a vibrant culture.
