Nestled in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley, McAllen takes pride in being Hidalgo County's largest city. The southern part of the city shares its border with Mexico, which is less than 10 miles (16 kilometers) away from the heart of McAllen. When the city was formed in the early 1900s it was primarily an agrarian one, but from the 1980s it began transforming into a metropolitan city. Tourism is an important feature of this city. The city center and downtown area are bustling with hotels, restaurants, shopping centers and more, that can suit the varied budget. The McAllen Street Festival, Palm Fest and McAllen Art Walk are prime festivals that visitors throng to, in this city.
