In the early years of the 20th Century, Antwerp's home fixtures were mostly played at the Broodstraat stadium. However, in the later years, the stadium could not accommodate the increasing number of fans that poured in to watch their home team play. Bosuilstadion was then built as a sprawling facility in Deurne, a suburb of Antwerp. It was established in the year 1923 and ever since, continues to serve as the home turf of Royal Antwerp FC. In the year 1964, the stadium played host to the second phase of the European Cup Winners' Cup Final. The semifinal tie between West Germany and Belgium was also played here in the year 1972.
