Established in 1835, Kingston Penitentiary or Kingston Pen used to be one of the oldest running prisons in the world. The maximum security prison was known to house infamous inmates who were doing time, including the high profile James Donnelly, the patriarch of the Donnelly crime family. With a capacity of more than 500 inmates, the Kingston Pen building now serves as a popular landmark although not in use since September of 2013.
