Nicknamed The City of Festivals, this Riverside County city was known as Indian Wells in the 1870s. Indio became a city in 1930. Surrounded by mountain ranges on its three sides, it is near the Salton Sink and Lake Cahuilla. It is a recognized National Bird Sanctuary. Agriculture and tourism are the major industries of this town. It hosts many cultural events throughout the year. These include the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Riverside County Fair, National Date Festival, Indio International Tamale Festival and Stagecoach. Some of the interesting sites to visit are General Patton Memorial Museum, Salton Sea State Recreation Area, Shields Date Farm, Indio Hills Palms, Coachella Valley History Museum and Indio Performing Arts Center.
