Morro Bay is a charming coastal town, best known for Morro Rock. This volcanic plug rises to 576 feet (175.56 meters) and is surrounded on three sides by Morro Bay and on the fourth side by the harbor. In fact, this rock is the first in a series of volcanic plugs in San Luis Obispo County called Nine Sisters (Morros). The rock serves as a preserve for Peregrine falcons (duck hawks), while Morro Bay State Park in the southern part of the city is a haven for birdwatchers. The state park is also home to two other volcanic plugs, Black Hill and Cerro Cabrillo, which are the second and third peaks of the Nine Sisters. Morro Bay Aquarium, Marina and National Estuary are other important attractions within the city. Morro Bay is the place of choice in Central California for surfing, and watching western gulls, dolphins, whales and sea otters. Blessed with divine natural trails, estuaries and beaches, Morro Bay is also a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
