The New York City Ballet is a ballet company based in New York City that was founded by famed choreographer George Balanchine and connoisseur Lincoln Kirstein. The ballet company was established in 1948 as a consolidation of smaller, prestigious troupes throughout New York, and in addition to Balanchine, Jerome Robbins also acted as once of the company's founding choreographer. Since its beginnings, the New York City Ballet has grown to become one of the city's most renowned ballet companies, and one of jewels in the crown of American artistic achievement.
