Every February, the Jorvik Viking Centre organizes the Jorvik Viking Festival, intended to introduce visitors to the ancient civilization. The center sits atop the site where Jarvik existed in 975 AD, and the vast amount of archaeological artifacts recovered are on display all year round. However, there is no better way to learn about Viking culture than to attend this festival. At various venues across York, people turn up in authentic costumes by the hundreds. Mock battles and training routines are staged, long-ship races held, lectures given and artifacts are displayed. All of this is then followed true Viking-style feast.
