After his career as a professional football player was cut short by a car accident, he picked up guitar and began writing songs. Honing in on his own folk-inspired dance pop style, he won the 1968 Benidorm International Song Festival with his tune "La Vida Sigue Igual," before dropping his debut album, Yo Canto, in 1969.
