Rapunzel is a German fairy tale that was collected by the Brothers Grimm and published in 1812. Telling the story of a beautiful young woman who has been locked away by an evil witch in an inaccessible tower, Rapunzel longs for the day when a dashing young prince will sweep her off her feet and rescue her. Filled will plenty of allegory and the light vs dark, good vs evil themes so quintessential to many of the Brothers Grimm stories, Rapunzel is a fairy tale with enough impact that it has found its way into the mainstream cultural lexicon. The tale has been adapted into numerous stage productions, including the children's rock musical, Rockpunzel.
