Roots Manuva is the stage name for Rodney Hylton Smith, a hip hop/dub artist from South London who made his critically acclaimed debut in 1994 with several singles released on small, up-and-coming British rap labels. After spending the following several years building a name for himself on London's burgeoning hip-hop scene, Roots Manuva released his first full-length studio album, Brand New Second Hand, which received significant acclaim from critics. Roots Manuva would continue his rise on the British charts with a string of albums throughout the 2000s that did much to ensure the artist's future as one of underground hip-hop's more legendary acts.
