German heavy metal band U.D.O. is undoubtedly one of the country's leading heavy metal bands. Formed in 1987 under the leadership of lead singer and songwriter Udo Dirkschneider, the band is known in large part for Udo's unmistakable voice and unrelenting lyrics. While the band has gone through a variety of formations over their many years, the core group and sound remains, and the band continues to dominate Europe's heavy metal scene through constant touring and continued record releases.
