Named in ode to existentialist philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche's book The Birth of Tragedy, Birth of Joy is a Dutch rock band that was formed in 2005 by students attending the Utrecht, Netherlands-based Herman Brood Academy. Making psychedelic leaning rock songs that are highly influenced by 1970s blues and more recent sludge metal tendencies, Birth of Joy managed to create a good amount of buzz for itself during its formative years in the Western European indie music scene. The group released its debut album Make Things Happen, in 2010 and Birth of Joy has since managed to evolve its sound by bringing in more naturalistic tones and melodic meanderings that bring to light the band's impressive instrumental prowess.
